fellow dorks - rejoice

great nerd news for everyone who listens to nashville mixtapes online:

you may have noticed the less than stellar audio quality. you may have noticed that the show cuts off during the live stream just before 8pm. you may have noticed the shorter-than-desired weekly audio archive. well, all these problems are fixed thanks to new hardware/server stuff at the wrvu "Nerve Center" - i'm not sure that's what they call it, but they should.

coming soon for all you real player haters: windows media streaming and flash mp4. mp3 streaming plans are also on the horizon, but you can start enjoying wrvu in all its 65kbps glory now. suck on that 44kbps!

so you can either stream wrvu live online here or hear all future archives of nashville mixtapes here. as always, these trusty links are also at the top left-hand side of each nashvillemixtapes.com page.

i know you're excited.

dandy warhols giveaway

the dandy warhols will be at mercy lounge next wednesday, sep 24 and you can win a pair of tickets to the concert this week during nashville mixtapes. for a certain older demographic (like mine) this is a chance to potentially see some early-90's indie goodness. for others, it's a chance to see those dig! documentary* stars rip off 80's electropop. either way, it should be fun and 2 free tickets beats $43.50 any day of the week. the new album, by the way, is pretty good.

since i'll be on the air from 7-10pm this friday, you can call in during the first hour and i'll announce the winner at 8. if you'd like to have your name entered into the drawing ahead of time just email me. either way, you'll need to stay tuned and call back into the station if i call your name. blah blah blah.

show #19 playlist

i'm back. and hopefully the new time will stick for the rest of the year. congratulations to the winner of the conor oberst tickets - i'll have an even cooler ticket giveaway next friday, so come back soon to find out more. also, unless something changes i'll be on the air from 7-10pm next friday night since d-funk will be m.i.a.

here's the playlist:

thee oh sees - maria stacks
the m's - pigs fly
the walkmen - in the new year
the war on drugs - arms like boulders
the walkmen - four provinces
margot & the nuclear so and so's - bookworm
wolf parade - call it a ritual
elbow - fallen angel
the privates - barricades
pulp - the night that minnie temperley died
mgmt - pieces of what
the rolling stones - it's all over now
the chocolate watchband - are you gonna be there (at the love in)
the standells - dirty water
them - i put a spell on you
the good, the bad, and the queen - history song
sharon jones & the dap-kings - be easy

one last thought... if you ever want to call up a 91.1 dj to tell him he sucks at what he does please don't. we do this for free, we do this when we could be doing something else, and we do this because we love music. just because you're having a shitty day doesn't make it okay to put a complete stranger down for no reason.

next big nashville

don't forget - next big nashville 2008 begins tonight all over town and continues through sunday. come out and see all your favorite nashville bands and a few out-of-town nashville favorites perform at several venues scattered in all the best venues around. you can buy a $35 wristband to gain access to everything or just pay as you go. but if you plan on seeing more than 3 bands, it's cheaper to just get the pass (plus you get cool discounts around town).

out the other/janet has done a great job summarizing some of the bands you may not be familiar with, so head over there to learn more.

2 free conor oberst tickets

free tickets are back this friday! conor oberst (of bright eyes fame) will headline at the ryman on sunday, sept 21 and you may be one of the lucky few to win your very own tickets. jenny lewis is the opener and the show starts promptly at 7:30. i have to be honest, i'm not ridiculously excited about this particular event. BUT... a lot of you have called in requesting these two artists' music in the past, so who am i to stand in the way of you and your chance to see them perform?

with a shorter nashville mixtapes this fall i do have to amend my giveaway technique. i still want everybody to have a fair chance, so i'll take calls during the first 40 minutes and announce the winner at 7:40. the winner needs to call in to claim their prize or i move on to a second round. if you'd like your name put in the hat you can either call during the show or email me beforehand.

another time change

NOW i'm going to be on the air friday nights at 7pm, but i won't be back at wrvu until september 12 because i'm taking a san francisco vacation. hopefully i'll come back with pictures from ratatat at the fillmore! fate does have a sense of humor, though - thee oh sees kick off their fall tour in san francisco 2 days after i get back home. rats.

speaking of thee oh sees, get your copy of their new cd/dvd thingy entitled "thee hounds of foggy notion" while you can. only 1000 copies were produced and they won't last long. here's a samplette:
