show #43 playlist

the subtle joys of twitter are beginning to reveal themselves. today michael (@yewknee) pointed out that amazon has some free indie label samplers available for download. i had never downloaded mp3's on amazon before and if you haven't i'd suggest you follow through with each free transaction one at a time - somehow i accidently bought an apples in stereo album i already own. anyway, you can follow nashville mixtapes on the twitters if you'd like to keep on top of this sort of thing.

so back to radio stuff. sadly there is no downloadable mixtape this week, but you can find previous mixtapes in the left-hand column. thanks for tuning in... here's the playlist:

ambulance ltd - ophelia
the asteroid no. 4 - into the meadow
dan auerbach - heartbroken, in despair
the beta band - human being
doves - the greatest denier
the decemberists - the hazards of love 1
the waterboys - sweet thing
the beatles - blackbird
m. ward - green river
robyn hitchcock & the venus 3 - what you is
peter bjorn & john - amsterdam
cotton jones - gotta cheer up
lambchop - up with people

another preview

the new decemberists record (as i'm sure sure you've all heard by now) is pretty damn good. it's all rock/folksy-opera-ish. they've always remind me a lot of the waterboys and since i haven't played the waterboys in a while, i think i'll put them on tomorrow night.

and i've been way into dan auerbach's new album this week (thanks npr), so he'll be somewhere in tomorrow's show too.

...don't forget to turn off your lights tonight.

tweet

so i've been on twitter for a while, but now i'm starting to actually use it. since weownthistown.net put out the clarion call this week, i'll follow suit... nashville mixtapes on twitter is mixtapesradio - add it if you want it.

and here's a preview to this sunday's show (springtime theme?):

say hi - november was white, december was grey

et tu, cody?

cody newman of codaphonic fame will not only be my featured guest during this sunday's show, he'll also be nashville mixtapes' first guest dj. although i don't regularly take calls, feel free to call in to the station (322-ROCK or 421-SOCK) and ask questions/make requests. with any luck i'll figure out how to get phone calls on the air, too...

so mark your calendars: the ides of march 2009 = cody day on nashville mixtapes. and if that's not enough for you, he'll play a solo set (with a band) on march 16 at the basement. all shows are 21+.

the strange boys et. al.

i've come across some new-to-me-but-not-new-at-all music lately thanks to the interwebs and free time. like...

the strange boys
they've been around for a few years and are apparently on a bunch of "bands to watch" lists (not that those ever mean anything). it's garage rock at its finest with great lyrics to boot. they'll be in atlanta and tuscaloosa in april, but have no nashville plans yet. the alabama date is the same night as brian jonestown massacre at exit/in, but if anybody wants to carpool to atlanta i'm all for it. their new album ...and girls club was released on march 3 or comes out march 24 depending on the source.

the handsome family
i'm ashamed to admit that i had never heard of the handsome family before this year. they've been around for well over a decade and obviously i've been living in a cave the whole time. i'm planning a trip to chicago just to see this highly accomplished indie/folk band play - that's how much i like the handsome family. and i think their song "so long" will end my show from now on. their new album honey moon comes out on april 14.

the handsome family - so long

the asteroid #4
i'm a sucker for any psychedlic space rock band that goes through the trouble of projecting cool shit behind them while onstage (think: the black angels at exit/in last summer). especially if they're good. this band gets a star by its name for covering spacemen 3:

blitzen trapper
yeah, they're not super new to me, but i hadn't heard of them a year ago so it counts. plus, they're fresh in my mind because they put on an excellent show at mercy last night. i was expecting a more subdued folksy concert, but i got straight up rock and roll instead - not bad at all.

show #39 playlist

you might have heard a piece on wpln last week focusing on a local band named quote. if you like nashville mixtapes then you should definitely check out quote's music. they'll play douglas corner on march 27 - give their site a visit to find out more.

look down the left-hand column and you'll see several new additions to the upcoming concert calender included a firm date for the war on drugs' first visit to nashville! april 26 at exit/in - tickets are $10 online.

anyway, if you enjoyed tonight's show you can stream it all week here.

if you just want to know what you heard, this is the playlist:

the brian jonestown massacre - nevertheless
thee oh sees - ship
the asteroid #4 - these flowers are ours
m. ward - for beginners
the walkmen - four provinces
them - i put a spell on you
the rolling stones - little red rooster
black rebel motorcycle club - fault line
the handsome family - weightless again
sparklehorse - hey joe
daniel johnston - held the hand
neil young - are you ready for the country?
ambulance ltd - heavy lifting
van morrison - sweet thing
bob dylan - baby, let me follow you down
silver jews - suffering jukebox
