here comes a show

paul selby has put together a set and will be playing at crescent cafe this thursday around 6:30 or so (weird time, i know). the show was hastily arranged just a couple days ago and i think this is his first nashville performance with many more to follow. ever the prolific songwriter, paul will be showcasing a bunch of new music he's recording right now. if you're a friend of the show, you may remember this tune:

paul selby - yellow soul

i thought i'd put the word out since yellow soul probably received more phone calls than anything else i've played. his newer material is a departure from what he's done in the past, so you can expect more upbeat songs. if you can't make it, don't worry - i'll probably play some of his new stuff later that night during nashville mixtapes.

nashville's finest

on several previous occasions i've promised a mysterious upcoming special program at an unspecified time full of the best music from the late 70's - mid 80's made by our town's local bands. these groups were all around town before lambchop, the features, the clutters et. al. took over.

well, my friend david was around back then and is hard at work compiling tunes and (yes!) interviews for what is evolving into a multi-part series sure to hit your ears soon enough.

with any luck i'll still have a radio show in the fall and you'll have a chance to hear everything he's putting together for us. i know my winter work schedule well enough to know i'll be in desperate need of a few no hassle shows. so stay tuned and with any luck the first installment of nashville's finest will be on the air sometime before the vandy kids show up again.

the apples in stereo giveaway

it's not as exciting as concert tickets, but if you'd like your own copy of the new apples in stereo album electronic projects for musicians just let me know. it's a collection of rarities and outtakes from 1995-2006 and comes with a free bonus track plus a free yep roc records sampler via download.

i may put your name in the pot for a thursday night giveaway, but i might just give it to you so feel free to email me if you're interested. i'd rather give it to someone who would really like a copy instead of someone who would really like to win something on a radio show.

oh, and don't forget, they're playing mercy lounge on july 29.

spiritualized!

i have a pair of tickets for one lucky listener to see spiritualized on tuesday, july 22 at city hall! they usually only tour major markets when they visit the states, so i believe this is a first for nashville. it's definitely one of the last shows you'll be able to see at city hall before it shuts down/relocates.

they put on an amazing show and i, for one, will be front row and center. if you don't know by now, spiritualized is by far one of my favorite bands and i will playing a few of their best songs throughout the first hour during the next show.

just like last time you can call in from 10-11 and i'll put your name in a hat. at 11 i'll announce the winner and you'll need to call back in to claim your prize. good luck!

review time #5

more album reviews on their way to the studio tonight...

artist - album - label

The War On Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues - Secretly Canadian

The War On Drugs have achieved what few do – they’ve made a thoroughly modern and relevant album. Yeah, you can hear bits of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Arcade Fire, Tom Petty, and George Harrison but don’t let that prejudice your opinion. This is NOT a folk rock, stadium, or hippie band. Whatever you don’t like about the above listed artists, The War On Drugs have eschewed. Whatever you like about those artists, this Philadelphia band have married with their own voice to make a completely new sound on this debut album. This is summer music at its best. Although it’s an album best heard in its entirety, track 1, track 2, and track 6 are the best examples of what they have achieved here.

Earlimart - Hymn And Her - Majordomo

Hymn And Her
is a nice album. Unfortunately, after 5 previous albums (this is the second in one year) I expected more. Apart from tracks 1 and 8, the songs are good but not great. Most are indie tunes a la Elliott Smith and there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that. Also, the high quality production makes the simplest songs sound interesting with lots of hidden bits and pieces. Although you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything patently unpleasant, in the end Hymn And Her suffers from the fact that it really is similar to a lot of other music out there.

hurried sounds

tomorrow's show will feature...

i have no idea. as promised for the past couple weeks, i had planned on featuring a history-of-nashville-mix featuring local bands from the late 70's and early 80's, but my major resource for all that stuff is missing in action. my own schedule is pretty hectic this week (it's space week on the science channel!) but i'll put together tomorrow's show instead. commitment, i tell you.

here's a sneak peek from the first 20 minutes:

earlimart - song for

oh, and if you missed the black angels at exit/in last saturday then shame on you.

beach songs

summer mix series is back and, pending approval, i should have my own compilation somewhere on there pretty soon. since it's vacation season, i decided to put together a mix for the beach. most songs are about the summer, the sun, and the beach. others are just tunes that sound like summertime to me. the last one is a red herring - it's my own personal summer '08 song.

you can download the whole thing here. i've never used that host before, so you can go to muxtape if it craps out or you just want to stream the mix.

the goods:

beach songs
1. fleet foxes - he doesn't know why
2. the beach boys - the warmth of the sun
3. panda bear - bros
4. working for a nuclear free city - sarah dreams of summer
5. stan getz & astrud gilberto - the girl from ipanema
6. the pogues - a pair of brown eyes

8. the velvet underground - who loves the sun
9. blonde redhead - spring and by summer fall
10. caribou - melody day
11. doves - catch the sun
12. neva dinova - supercomputer

double the fun

the rah-rah-americah holiday is nearly here and you can start your long weekend on the right foot by listening this thursday at the regular time. i mean, you get to sleep in on friday, right?

and if that isn't cool enough for you, i'll be substituting on antennas to heaven this friday from 4-6pm. the venerable annie w. will not be able to make her show this week and has asked little ol' me to spin tunes in her absence. i feel like a total wrvu nerd who has just been picked to play on the cool kids' team.
