san francisco nights

last spring i became briefly obsessed with san francisco band thee oh sees. truth be told i still jump every time i hear they're on tour, putting out new music, etc. but there was one major flaw in this obsession - uncharacteristically, i didn't follow through and see what else is going on musically in and around san francisco. it's one of my favorite cities, but bands from there tend to stay close to home and don't garner much attention beyond silicon valley and the occasional music blog.

so i was piddling around online last night and came across some san francisco/northern ca music that will hopefully make its way to the show over the next few weeks. like...

papercuts

the botticellis

the mumlers
the mumlers - red river hustle

and this is thee oh sees, in case you haven't heard them yet:

psycho

so anthony perkins (i.e. norman bates in "psycho") had a kid back in '76 who grew up to be a professional musician. you already knew this, but i didn't because i'm clueless.

now that elvis perkins and i have been properly introduced, i may start off tomorrow night's show with this:

free music archive

there is a new place for music fans to legally download free music without any hassle from the man. it turns out that new york state has a philanthropic music fund that originated from payola fines paid out by big labels to the state. they've taken some of that money and created free music archive. every piece of music is free and has been cleared by people who know copyright law.

fma is in its beta form now, but you can already sign up to create shareable compilations or just download away now without logging in to anything. currently the site appears to be curated by two of the best free form radio stations in the country - wfmu and kexp - so the selection is already pretty rad, i must say.

keep buying music, though. okay?
