monday night mixtapes

if you can't get enough mix tape goodness, give monday night mixtapes a shot. one of my listeners called into the show last night to point me in the direction of the monday night mixtapes blog and they definitely have the right idea. you can mail your mix tape to them and if it makes the cut, they feature it. it looks like a new mix is posted every monday, but there are also some pretty entertaining entries throughout the week.

anybody who recommends sitting on your front porch with a beer and otis redding is alright in my book.

bonnaroo?

somehow i've scored a free backstage pass for saturday at bonnaroo. a friend of a friend works for one of the bands and i get to reap the benefits. so i just took a look at the festival's lineup and it's kind of disappointing - gone are the days of radiohead in manchester, tn.

in fact, the only act that excites me is sigur ros. why the hell are they playing from 1-3am??? unfortunately, talib kweli is playing from 2:15-3am on a different stage. i could get into seeing cat power or ben folds if i happen to be in that kind of mood, but for the most part i'm wondering if it's even worth the trip. pearl jam, jack johnson, 4 hours of phil lesh & friends...? not so much.

i'm curious if anyone reading this has ever ventured to "the 'roo" (i hear that's what true bonnaroo fans call it) before and if you think i should take this backstage pass. here's the full saturday lineup. who knows? maybe i'm missing another worthwhile band on that list.

mostly, i'm just wary of 80,000+ versions of this guy. i mean, it's going to be pretty damn hot out there.

sub time

i'll be substituting for dj jazzy jesse's show "these are the breaks" saturday evening from 6-8. i don't know if i'll stick around to sub for viva vaia from 8-9 because i have other things going on and i'm not sure how to fill up 3 hours of airtime in the first place.

anyway, it should be a fun show but i wouldn't expect to hear jesse's signature breakbeats and electronica if i were you. listen to the these are the breaks audio archive all next week if you're too busy grilling out, fishing, camping, or whatever else you're supposed to do on memorial day weekend.

okay, i'm back

last week began with disappointment (see the previous blog post), but a vacation always seems to turn things around and great music while on vacation is even better.

first there was radiohead in atlanta

then the apollo up! release party/send-off at the basement, then DeVotchKa at mercy, and now...

finally...

wrvu's summer schedule!

nashville mixtapes will be on the air live every thursday night from 10:00 - 12:00 all summer long starting this week. as always, feel free to email me at nashvillemixtapes@gmail.com with any questions, suggestions, comments, or ideas for future show. it's your mix tape, after all.

rats

once again, the end of vanderbilt's semester has made show scheduling a challenge. obviously i'm new to all this and am finding these things out the hard way.

if you tuned in to listen to the show tonight, i'm sorry that you only got about 10 minutes of my stuff before someone else took over. it's a long story, but obviously there was some confusion (but no hard feelings!) about tonight's schedule.

so i'll go on vacation in a couple days, attend next sunday's scheduling meeting, and wait to go back on the air when my show has a set schedule for the entire summer. no worries, though. it should all be sorted out in about a week or so and at least i have my next show already planned out, right?

here's a song the fcc wouldn't let me play anyway...

northern soul nite

this week's mix will be all the best in northern soul music. in the 60's a lot of north english kids who were bored with rock and roll listened to underground uptempo soul music instead. they called it northern soul to draw a distinction between what they liked and popular r&b. the scene's influence is still around - breakdancing is very similar to northern soul dancing and skinny jeans, quirky buttons, patches, etc. all come from the northern soul subculture.

i have a modest n.s. collection of my own, but if it weren't for the soul girl i wouldn't have i saw you there by the appointments (a 45 that sells for $5000 in england!) or voodoo man by four tracks (worth $3000!).

so tune in this sunday night from 8-10pm cst to hear the best in bass-and-beat-driven soul music the first hour and good new stuff the second hour. at least you'll get your money's worth.
